Gwent Branch of

Cats Protection

Trapping and neutering feral cats at a local factory.

The sudden closure of Alphasteel in Newport created a huge problem for
the 80 feral cats living on the premises. They had acted as mousers and
rodent control for a number of years and had been fed by many caring cat
lovers at the plant. Since the plant closed just before Christmas, there were
only a small number of employees remaining on site who are doing their very
best to ensure that the cats are being fed, but with so many cats, it was
proving very difficult for them.

Although a few of the cats are friendly, the majority were feral and set out to neuter and rehome as many as possible.

After a great deal of hard work and time, we we have neutered 62 cats that were unneutered & healthy onsite and rehomed 54 cats, mainly to outdoor homes.

We would like to thank everyone that has helped & if anyone can offer outdoor homes, please ring 01633 895223.

Fluffy has a new home!

Fluffy is a dark tortie female who has been in care since July 2007.  She has found a new loving home and went there today. A lovely gentleman in Brynmawr agreed that he had lots of time and patience to take her on.

Good luck to them both, lets hope that they are very happy!

New Cat Care Standards

As from 1st January 2008 we will be vaccinating all cats & kittens in our care, as well as neutering, microchipping, vet checking, worming, fleaing & offering 6 weeks free Insurance with Pet Plan. We also test certain cats & kittens that come into our care for FIV and FeLV (anything unneutered, strays, sick, from a high risk area, mums of kittens or a percentage of kittens from a litter if we do not have access to mum). Of course, this will increase the cost on the branch and so we are increasing the donation that we request to £45, but of course this is a donation & so any amount can be offered. Although this may seem a lot, especially if adopting 2 from us, please remember that all this could add up to over £120 per cat if  you did it all yourself at most vets, & that is without any treatment that the cat may need whilst in our care!

Cat Reunited after 5 years!

Check out the story of Fernando, a lovely pale ginger male that we took in as a stray from the Caerphilly area. He was microchipped (twice!) & had been reported missing in March 02, however the PetLog details were out of date so some detective work was needed.

Update - sadly Lily had to be put to sleep recently as she had become too ill. She is sadly missed. xx
