Gwent Branch of

Cats Protection

Welcome to Gwent Branch of Cats Protection

The Cats Protection in Gwent is one of over 260 branches of Cats Protection volunteers in the UK, rescuing, treating, neutering and re-homing unwanted or abandoned cats and kittens. This is done through a network of fosterers, who care for the needy animals until someone offers them a loving home.

We work towards three key aims:

  • To rescue stray and unwanted cats and kittens, and rehabilitate and rehome them where possible.
  • To encourage the neutering of all cats not required for breeding.
  • To inform the public about the care of cats and kittens.

The branch was formed in 1979 & we have had our ups and downs in this period but have been fairly stable for the majority of the time. At the end of 2000 a large number of the committee retired or left the branch, leaving a few panicked volunteers!

We held a major recruitment drive in Feb 2001, which was a do or die affair. If we were unable to attract new, active volunteers then the branch would probably have closed. It was successful beyond our greatest expectations.

We were able to recruit, amongst others, a homing officer, 3 new fosterers, 5 new home visitors and a new web site designer. We had over 10 volunteers that have stayed the course and so the branch continues! We have regrouped, rearranged and are now a thriving, busy branch. Take a look at the people who are now on the COMMITTEE.

For the first few months of 2001 we were operating on only 3 pens. We are now up to 11 outdoor pens, 5 permanent bedrooms, and also 2-3 emergency rooms, which are often full! If you are interested in fostering then have a look at our FOSTERING page which gives you more information.

If you would like to offer a cat a home (subject to a friendly home visit!), would like to help in anyway or would simply like some more information then please check out our HOW YOU CAN HELP page.

HOMING

One of the objectives of the Cats Protection is to rescue stray and unwanted cats and kittens, rehabilitating and rehoming them where possible. Most cats are intelligent, playful and friendly and as long as a good home can be found, most can be rehomed.

Did you know:

Gwent can have between 30-40 cats in care at any one time.

We have a few long term cats who have been persistently over looked and have had to make a home with their foster parent.

bullet

We also feed, neuter and provide veterinary care for a number of feral colonies in the area.

The branch is run by volunteers who give up their time, homes and often money, to help the needy cats in the area.
